Usage Policy
What happens if… in plain English.
Our formal Terms of Service cover the legal contract. This page answers the practical “what happens if” questions in everyday language. Where the two ever conflict, the Terms take precedence — but we'll always honour the spirit of what's written here.
What happens if I stop paying my monthly fee?
If a monthly invoice goes more than 14 days unpaid, we pause hosting — your live site goes offline (replaced with a polite holding page) and we stop monthly edits. Your domain stays yours throughout.
We hold the build for 60 days after the pause. If you settle the invoice in that window, we put it back live the same day. After 60 days we delete the build from our infrastructure.
We never charge a cancellation fee, and we never “hold the site hostage.” If you want out cleanly, just tell us — see below.
How do I cancel cleanly?
Email us 14 days before your next billing date and we'll close out at the end of the current period — no further charges, no cancellation fee.
Your domain stays exactly where it was registered, and any content or brand assets you originally provided remain yours. If you want the source code itself, switch to the Own It tier (one-off fee) and we'll hand over the GitHub repo — see the next question.
Who owns the code while I'm paying you monthly?
We do. On the Starter, Grow and VIP tiers, the underlying source code (React/Next.js, components, CMS configuration) belongs to Sitewright Studio while you're on the recurring plan. You're licensed to use the live site, not to redistribute, fork, or self-host the codebase.
What's always yours: your domain, the brand assets you provided, the content you wrote (or that we drafted for you).
If owning the code matters to you, the Own It tier hands over the full source on delivery — see the next question.
How do I get the code if I want it?
Two ways:
- Buy it out: switch to the Own It tier at any time. Pay the one-off fee, we hand you the GitHub repo, and you're free to host it wherever you want. Monthly billing stops.
- Pick Own It from day one: same outcome, lower total — you skip ever paying a recurring fee.
What about my domain?
Your domain is always yours. We never register it on our account — when you bought the domain, it went on your registrar (or on Vercel under your team).
If you cancel, we simply remove our DNS pointers; the domain itself stays exactly where it was.
What counts as a “minor edit”?
Up to roughly 30 minutes of changes per month is included on every recurring plan. Examples of what counts:
- Copy tweaks (fixing typos, updating prices, adding a team member)
- Swapping out images we already host
- Adding or removing a small section of an existing page
- Updating links, dates, or contact details
What doesn't count as a minor edit?
Bigger work that needs design or development time of more than ~30 minutes. We'll quote it upfront as a one-off — never silently bill you for it. Examples:
- Adding a new page from scratch
- Redesigning an existing section
- Wiring up a new third-party integration
- Migrating to a different CMS or e-commerce platform
What we won't build (acceptable use)
We reserve the right to refuse work for content that's illegal, deceptive, or knowingly harmful. In practical terms that means we won't build sites for:
- Scams, phishing, or fraud
- Hate speech, harassment, or content that incites violence
- Adult content or unlicensed gambling (regulated industries we're not set up for)
- Anything that violates third-party copyright or trademarks
Refunds
Setup fees are non-refundable once we've started design work, because most of the cost is the build itself.
If you change your mind within 7 days of starting and we haven't begun design, we'll refund the setup fee in full minus payment-processor fees.
Monthly fees are billed in advance and aren't pro-rated on cancellation — but we don't charge for any month you cancel before it begins.
Late payments
If a monthly invoice is unpaid for 7 days, we'll email a reminder. At 14 days unpaid we pause hosting and edits (see “What happens if I stop paying” above). We don't add late fees or interest.
If we have a dispute
We'll always try to resolve things by email first — almost everything gets sorted in one or two messages.
If we can't agree, the legal terms (governed by the law of England and Wales) apply. See our Terms of Service for the full detail.
